Abstract

This article discusses the cultural acculturation of the Kamandaka Legend as an effort to preserve the local wisdom of Banyumas. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method supported by field interviews and hermeneutic theories from Jurgen Habermas. The main purpose of this article is to identify how the acculturation that occurs in the story of the Legend of Kamandaka can unite Sundanese and Javanese cultures, as well as give birth to a new culture in Banyumas. Textually, the unity of the two cultures can be seen through the marriage of Kamandaka, a hero from the Galuh kingdom (Sunda), with Ciptarasa, the daughter of Pasir Luhur, Banyumas (Java). This wedding is a symbol of the merger of two major cultures that have differences in language, customs, and beliefs.

Conversely, the acculturation process in the Kamandaka Legend can be seen in the transformation of this story into a performing art, namely the Kamandaka ballet. This art combines elements of Sundanese and Javanese cultures, including dances, musical instruments, and instruments from both cultures. Through this cultural acculturation, the story of Kamandaka, which was originally part of oral history, can continue to develop and be accepted by society to this day in the form of a living performing art. This acculturation process not only functions as a preservation of folklore, but also as a means to preserve local wisdom of Banyumas. In conclusion, the acculturation reflected in the Legend of Kamandaka is an effective means to maintain and develop the local culture of Banyumas, so that it remains relevant and can be enjoyed by people of various generations.
