Abstract

This study explores the performance of wayang klithik in the context of the reresik sendhang ritual in Wonosoco Village, Kudus, Central Java, through an ecocriticism perspective. The ecocriticism perspective examines how rituals and art serve as narratives related to ecological issues and conservation practices. The community of Wonosoco Village, Kudus, believes that the sendhang (sacred spring) around the village is a sacred place inhabited by guardians (dhanyang). Based on this belief, the people of Wonosoco Village have a long-standing tradition of holding the reresik sendhang ritual in conjunction with a wayang klithik performance. The reresik sendhang ritual is also an expression of gratitude to God Almighty for blessings such as abundant harvests, good health, and so on. The people of Wonosoco Village believe that if the reresik sendhang ritual with a wayang klithik performance is not held once a year, the village will suffer from disaster or calamity. This research is a qualitative study that elaborates on ethnographic, anthropological, and art studies approaches. The findings can be described as follows: First, besides functioning as entertainment and a space for social collectivity, the wayang klithik performance in the reresik sendhang ritual also serves to transmit messages of nature conservation, ecological issues, and the sustainability of the village’s surrounding environment; Second, the emergence of integration between culture, art, and ecology in efforts to preserve the environment and strengthen community identity. The benefit of this research is to provide new insights into how community art practices and cultural traditions can contribute to the understanding and preservation of the environment.
