Abstract

This study aims to examine the intermediality of collective memory of the September 1965 event on the Spotify platform. Intermediality is a concept that explains the relationship and interaction between various media in works of art, literature, films, podcasts, or other forms of cultural expression. This term is often used in media culture studies to describe how different media influence and enrich each other. This qualitative study uses content analysis methods to observe the September 1965 historical podcast and relevant literature studies. The results of this study indicate that the intermediality of the history of September 30, 1965, in Indonesia on the Spotify podcast provides a new experience for listeners in enjoying history digitally, through audio elements that create a theater of mind. Representatively, the podcast can also revive, and present collective memories related to September 1965 from four points of view. First, the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) was the mastermind behind the coup to overthrow the government constructed by the New Order government. Second, at the peak of the internal conflict in the Army, Third, collaboration between military officers and the PKI as supporters. Fourth, the September 1965 movement was designed to fail through double agents. The intermediality of the podcast reduces, adding and reconstructing various variations in the plot, setting, and characters on the Spotify platform, which has limited time or duration, so that it cannot include all historical facts. Through intermediality, the podcast “September 1965” facilitates the transmission of collective memory in a new way, more dynamic and interactive form.
