Abstract

The purpose of this article is to study the symbolic meaning found in the Auman Tradition in Ngargotontro, Sumber Village, Dukuh District, Magelang Regency. The Auman tradition is an annual event held on the slopes of Mount Merapi. This tradition represents various kinds of events, such as the Angguk Rame Art Ceremony, Kenduri (feast), Munjung (offerings), Tirakatan (night prayers as celebration), and Bresik Makam (cemetery cleaning). This research uses a descriptive qualitative methodology, and the semiotic theory uses as the analytical tool. The research results show that each series of events has its own symbolic meaning that is believed by its surrounding community. The first event is the Kenduri ceremony, which symbolizes the expression of the community’s connection with nature and the need to achieve ecological balance. The following is the Munjung, to shows a sign of respect to elders or those positions of authority. Third is Tirakatan, which reflects the aspect of spirituality in Auman tradition. Fourth is Bresik Makam which serves as a symbol of respect for ancestors, connecting the present with the past. Lastly, the Rame Angguk Art Ceremony reflects a form of cultural expression in celebrating cultural heritage and strengthening the community identity. Auman tradition plays an important role in preserving a cultural identity rich in values and symbolic meanings contained in every event and celebration. To being a part of great cultural history, this tradition represents sustainability and the relationship between humans, nature, and their ancestors.
