- Abstract
This study investigates the challenges faced by elementary students in learning mathematics, focusing on epistemological, psychological, didactic, and ontogenic obstacles. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations involving 30 students from Sukabumi, Indonesia. The findings reveal that students struggle with understanding fundamental concepts, experience math anxiety, and are hindered by non-interactive teaching methods and limited parental support. These challenges are interconnected, creating a negative cycle that impacts students’ motivation and academic performance. The study underscores the need for holistic interventions involving teachers, parents, and policymakers to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Limitations of the study include its regional focus and reliance on qualitative methods, suggesting the need for future research to adopt a mixed-methods approach and explore broader perspectives.
