Abstract

With the abolition of the imperial examination system in the late Qing dynasty and the subsequent transformations following the Xinhai Revolution, various modern educational systems and emerging pedagogical concepts gradually matured and perfected in Linfen County, Shanxi. Concurrently, the stabilisation of the administrative environment and rapid economic development fuelled a strong demand for cultural education among the people of Linfen. Consequently, driven by multiple initiatives from both government and citizens – including advancing educational work, constructing cultural and educational venues, compiling gazetteers, and building altars, temples, and ancestral halls – not only were the people’s pressing cultural needs met, but the cultural atmosphere in Linfen during the Republican era grew increasingly rich.
