Abstract

This study explores the perceptions of children with intellectual disabilities regarding their fathers’ mindfulness in parenting in Indonesian cultural context. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach through seventeen in-depth interviews, the research examines how paternal calmness, awareness, and presence manifest in routine family interactions. The findings indicate that fathers demonstrate mindfulness primarily through patient composure and consistent attentiveness, rather than through explicit verbal instruction, which contributes to a sense of care, acceptance, and emotional safety for their children. The role of fatherhood appears as a relational context defined by shared empathy and subtle understanding. This study expands existing frameworks of mindful parenting by positioning it as a culturally informed relational practice that supports emotional growth and social inclusion. Furthermore, cultural principles such as humility and self-restraint are found to shape these mindfulness expressions, providing new insights into non-Western perspectives on mindful parenting. Mindful fatherhood, consequently, serves as a transformative basis for advancing inclusion, emotional literacy, and family well-being.
