Abstract

Effective language instruction is a significant tool for sustainably empowering tourism by enhancing communication, cultural exchange, and economic opportunities while promoting tourist attractions in a global context. This study aimed to compare the speaking ability of youth guides before and after learning English for Buddhist Community-based Tourism using an interactive approach integrated with speaking strategies, and to examine the relationships between these strategies and speaking components. The sample group consisted of thirty-six eleventh grade high school students who served as youth guides in Nakhon Ratchasima Province in Thailand. The instruments included a needs analysis questionnaire, lesson plans for English for Buddhist Community-based Tourism, pre-post speaking tests, and a speaking strategies questionnaire. Paired-samples t-test, multiple regression analysis and content analysis were employed, along with means and standard deviations. The results showed that interactive instruction combined with speaking strategies led to a significant improvement in speaking ability across all six components at the .05 level. The post-test mean indicated a marked enhancement in English-speaking skills, with the youth guides progressing from a poor to a good level, particularly in content. Furthermore, the results revealed statistically significant negative relationships between social-affective strategies and fluency in Task 1, gesture performance in Task 2, overall fluency scores and overall gesture scores. Conversely, accuracy-oriented strategies were positively associated with content in Task 2.
