Abstract

This study explores the perceptions and attitudes of pre-service teachers toward ChatGPT as a learning tool. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, we administered questionnaires to 72 pre-service teachers across various education majors and conducted in-depth interviews with 10 participants to gain deeper insights into their knowledge and attitudes regarding ChatGPT. The findings indicate that while participants are aware of ChatGPT’s existence, their understanding of its capabilities and limitations remains partial and superficial. Despite this limited knowledge, the majority expressed positive attitudes toward the use of ChatGPT, viewing it as a valuable tool for enhancing engagement and accessibility in their learning processes. However, significant concerns were also highlighted. Participants worried that ChatGPT could hinder the development of critical thinking skills, be misused for academic cheating, undermine academic integrity, and provide misinformation. Recommendations include the establishment of clear guidelines and AI literacy programs to ensure responsible and effective use of AI in education, thus balancing the advantages of technology with the need to foster critical thinking and uphold academic honesty.
