Abstract

Drug abuse remains a significant issue to public health and social stability globally, with Malaysia facing similar challenges as the number of cases involving drugs rises annually. The negative impacts of drug abuse not only affecting that particular person, but it is also giving a major impact to the family, community, and the national economy. Drug prevention programs play an important role in reducing the rate and possibilities of drug abuse, particularly among those who are at risk of being influence. This paper aims to analyze the functional and social value of drug prevention programs in Malaysia. Quantitative research is conducted in this study. A total of 216 respondents in high-risk areas Malaysia are randomly selected to participate. Questionnaire is used to investigate the communities’ perception towards the drug prevention program. Descriptive statistics and mean score are used to analyze the data obtained. Findings show that the mean score for both functional and social value are at high level. This explains that the drug prevention program is effective in increasing communities’ information, support, skills, access to support services and social sensitivity towards the drug problem. The implication of this study is highlight that improving both the functional and social value of drug prevention programs can result in more effective and sustainable programs in high-risk communities. Analyzing these dual dimensions will help policymakers and practitioners creating programs that not only reduce drug abuse rates but also develop stronger community that support each other.
