Abstract

Lontar Sri Tanjung is one of the classic literatures in Java, Indonesia. The story of Sri Tanjung is one of the folktales that remains alive and has been transformed into various works of art in East Java. Sri Tanjung in various narratives and studies is known as a poor woman who died because of the cruelty of patriarchal culture. However, these interpretations are incomplete because they only interpret part of the story. Through a structuralist approach, we reveal Sri Tanjung’s power as a goddess. The data were the Lontar Sri Tanjung text, the Banyuwangi version of the Sri Tanjung story. The focus of this study is to find (1) signs of power and the source of Sri Tanjung’s power as a goddess and (2) patterns of how Sri Tanjung’s power works. The power of the goddess shows its signs; it is the prominence that consists of facial radiance, purity, knowledge, and blood lines. The power of the goddess works with both positive and negative relationship patterns. The goddess has a positive impact if his/her response is positive. The goddess has a negative impact if her response is negative. Goddess power is feminine; that is, it moves without aggression, is gentle, demands justice personally, moves without touching, and is magical. The analysis shows that Sri Tanjung cannot be excluded from power relations. Sri Tanjung’s power is not subordinate, and has a different rule with men’s power.
