Abstract

This article analyzes the conservation of heritage areas in Madiun City as the basis for sustainable urban tourism development through the heritage urban landscape approach. Using a qualitative-interpretive research design, this study combines heritage ethnography and urban morphology analysis to explore the relationship between physical forms, collective memory, and economic-cultural dynamics in the transformation of historic spaces. The results of the study show that conservation in Madiun is a social process that involves negotiation between local identity, economic values, and colonial heritage that are reproduced through tourism practices and creative economy. The integration of the concepts of place identity, cultural economy, and morphological memory resulted in a conceptual model of the Heritage Urban Landscape Sustainability Model (HULSM) that emphasizes three main pillars: spatial ecological sustainability, socio-cultural sustainability, and economic sustainability. This model offers a collaborative governance framework based on community participation and the creative economy to encourage inclusive and adaptive conservation. These findings enrich the study of urban heritage by affirming that heritage preservation is not only physical-oriented, but also a living practice that shapes the identity and sustainability of contemporary cities.
