- Abstract
This study aims to examine the characteristics of moderate citizenship in Indonesian Islamic Boarding School (Pesantren) and find a new concept called Inclusive Citizenship Character (ICC). Through a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis, this study involved nine respondent Pesantren leaders representing three different typologies: modern, semi-modern, and traditional Pesantren. The results revealed that Pesantren leaders apply a leadership model that prioritizes inclusiveness values in shaping santri’s citizenship character, which is then formulated as the ICC concept. There are variations in the application of leadership models based on Pesantren typology, with modern Pesantren tending to be more open to the values of diversity, semi-modern Pesantren showing selective adaptation to modernity, while traditional Pesantren emphasize the values of local wisdom integrated with the principle of tolerance. This study identifies five main dimensions of ICC as new findings: openness to differences, commitment to social justice, cross-cultural dialog skills, conflict resolution skills, and orientation to the common good. This research is important to do considering the vital role of Pesantren as an Islamic educational institution that has the potential to become a bastion of religious moderation and a shaper of inclusive citizenship character in the midst of strengthening social and political polarization. This research contributes to the formulation of the ICC concept which can become a new theoretical framework in the study of Islamic educational leadership, as well as provide practical recommendations for strengthening inclusive citizenship education in Pesantren which has an impact on deradicalization efforts and strengthening social cohesion in pluralistic Indonesian society.
