Abstract

This paper explores the application of eco-translatology in the localization of multimodal products, using the English translation of Portraits (“影神图”, Ying Shen Tu) in the game Black Myth: Wukong as a case study. As a multimodal adaptation of the Chinese classic Journey to the West, the game embodies a blend of traditional Chinese mythology with modern digital gaming, necessitating a nuanced localization strategy to address both linguistic and cultural challenges. The study examines specific cases of localization, focusing on the translation of the characters’ names, places, and other cultural elements. By applying eco-translatology, which emphasizes the dynamic interaction between text, culture, and environment, the paper argues for the use of adaptive transformation principles in multimodal product localization. Furthermore, it introduces a multimodal translation approach, which provides a more innovative solution to the challenges posed by complex multimodal texts. The findings contribute to the theoretical development of multimodal translation and offer practical insights for the localization of video games and audiovisual media in cross-cultural contexts.
