Abstract

Taking the bilingual subtitled text of the film Project Gutenberg as the object of study, this paper explores the significant differences between Chinese and English in terms of expressions, cultural connotations, and social values. Firstly, the paper reveals the complexity of Chinese address terms and the relative simplicity of English address terms, and analyses the root causes of such differences from the perspectives of cultural differences and social composition. In addition, the paper explores the differences in affective expressions and idiomaticity developed by bilinguals in different language acquisition environments, as well as the impact of these differences on the quality of English translations. Based on the high-context and low-context theories, the paper further analyses the impact of different cultural communication styles on subtitle translation. Finally, the paper discusses the role of two translation strategies, domestication, and foreignization, in cross-cultural communication, and analyses the impact of different strategies on the readers of translated texts. The article stresses that appropriate translation strategies should be chosen according to specific situations in order to better convey cultural information and values and promote cross-cultural communication and understanding.
