- Abstract
The nature of the First Crusade had long been debated by scholars across relevant fields. This paper digs into the complex historiographies of the First Crusade since 1950s to provide a clear account of the intricate debates. It focuses on Marxist influence on the study of this historical event as an entry point to reveal the contexts of the debates through a chronological sequence. In a roughly chronological order, it analyses scholarly work on the nature on the First Crusade influenced by Marxism, against Marxism and recent revival of Marxist approach.
