- Abstract
Higher education has the functions of promoting the upward mobility of individuals, which is embodied in improving personal knowledge and skills, increasing the opportunities of employment and career development, and broadening social interaction and resource acquisition. However, since the implementation of the policy of expanding enrolment in universities in China in 1999, the rapid expansion of higher education has led to a devaluation of academic qualifications. Therefore, the ability of higher education to promote social mobility has declined, directly reflecting the decline in the growth rate of average monthly salary and wage index of college students six months after graduation in China. We should take measures such as slowing down the expansion of enrolment, improving the quality of education, and strengthening university - enterprise cooperation to address the weakened social mobility function of higher education in China.
