- Abstract
As the pressure of environmental problems mounted globally, civil society has become an important force for countries to improve environmental governance. China has also witnessed the rise and development of environmental non-governmental organizations in recent years. Selecting China’s first ENGO, Friends of Nature, this study aims to investigate the determinants affecting the role cognition and organizational growth of FON in China. By reviewing existing literature and undertaking a qualitative case study, the study finds out both the external and internal factors influence the growth of FON. The results show that the government recognition and attitudes, the public’s trust and acknowledgement and FON’s self-environmental actions can impact the process of FON. This has implications for the better operation of environmental NGOs in China.
