Abstract

Persuasive technology uses computer software to change attitudes or behaviours without force or deception. Trust and emotions play a crucial role in how well persuasive technologies work. The review explores the current state of persuasive technology in health applications, highlighting its potential to promote healthier behaviours through mobile and web-based interventions. There are several research adapt and integrate persuasive strategies and behaviour change theories into applications targeting physical activity, obesity management, sleep habits, and chronic condition support. While these interventions show promise in leveraging personalization, context-awareness, and advanced technologies like augmented reality, several challenges persist. There are several limitations include a lack of long-term studies to assess sustained impact, small sample sizes affecting generalizability, and difficulties in isolating the effectiveness of individual persuasive strategies. The review also identifies a need for more standardized and objective evaluation methods, as many studies rely on perceived persuasiveness rather than concrete behaviour change measures. Future research directions are suggested, including conducting longer-term studies with larger, diverse samples, developing standardized evaluation methods, and addressing ethical considerations in persuasive health technologies. Despite its potential, significant work remains to establish the long-term effectiveness of persuasive technology and develop best practices for its ethical implementation across diverse health contexts.
