- Abstract
The California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test is normally used for the evaluation of the performance of subgrade in pavement construction. The CBR value is obtained through the field CBR test which is expensive and time-consuming. An alternative to the mechanical CBR test is the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) test. The DCP is a device designed to rapidly test the strength of soil layers using the principle of penetration of a cone into the soil. CBR value can be obtained from the result of DCP test through correlation. Some correlations between DCP value and CBR have been developed but the application of these correlations needs to be verified for local soil. The other problem is the procedures adopted for obtaining the field DCP value should be verified in maintained conditions. This study aims to calibrate the results of the field DCP test by performing the same test on laboratory-compacted soil, then to assess the validity of the correlation between the field CBR values and the field DCP. Results show that the field DCP agrees with the laboratory DCP with a coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.9984, and the correlation coefficient (r) = R = 0.9991. Furthermore, the results of laboratory CBR from DCP (%) and field CBR from DCP (%) shows the coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.9981, and the correlation coefficient (r) = R = 0.9990. This means that the two tests show a very strong relationship.
