Abstract

Modern-day medical care is performed through EHRs (electronic health records). These systems have caused a major change in the way that physicians keep records. Most of today’s EHRs incorporate centralized systems. The centralized system introduces major security issues, breaches of patient privacy, and limits on how patients may control their own medical information. This research introduces a blockchain-based healthcare framework for security and interoperability utilizing a Global Patient Identifier (GPID). The proposed healthcare framework contains smart contracts and encryption methods to ensure that the data is valid, to establish access control, and to securely share the data within the healthcare community. An additional feature of the research presents a version-controlled mechanism to address and resolve record data conflict issues that occur when two or more parties are updating the same record at the same time. Evaluation of the study was accomplished using a Private Ethereum Blockchain Network and simulated in real time from multiple sites; the results show the successful identification of conflicting updated records, that the data is kept in a consistent manner and provides a greater level of transparency and security to healthcare providers throughout the world. Detection rate of conflicts in 50 test cases where updates occurred concurrently was 100%, while the average delay for transaction was 1.2 seconds in our experiment without any data inconsistencies reported. These results demonstrate that the proposed framework has strong potential as a reliable and efficient solution for healthcare data management under evaluated conditions.
