- Abstract
Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) represent a vast, multidisciplinary body of knowledge developed over centuries in domains such as medicine, language, mathematics, stars, farming, and philosophy, will always be valuable to the world. With today’s technological transformation through ‘artificial intelligence’ (AI), many researchers are now trying to use computational techniques to maintain, understand, and apply traditional Indian systems of knowledge to modern society. This paper is a comprehensive systematic review of AI programs used in traditional Indian knowledge theories. The authors classify what is known about AI and traditional Indian knowledge into categories, create a framework for how these disciplines might be used together in the future, and describe the kinds of programs using AI to invoke Indian knowledge systems to develop the structure and behaviours of the AI system. They also identify some of the challenges of using these two kinds of knowledge to work together (e.g. no data/insufficient data; ambiguous meaning; no agreed-upon format; ethical concerns). The authors conclude by announcing some future directions (e.g. building explainable AI; developing knowledge graphs; and establishing inter-disciplinary frameworks to provide guidance for the continuing sustainable integration of AI with IKS).
