Abstract

Han Chinese wedding embroidery patterns serve as significant material carriers of the cultural concept of “harmony and union” (he-he). This study, grounded in the theory of artistic semiotics, constructs an analytical framework of “symbol decoding – visual grammar analysis – cultural connotation interpretation” to systematically examine the visual transformation mechanisms of such patterns. At the symbolic level, the patterns utilize homophonic translation, metaphorical symbolism, and textual narrative to express the concept of “he-he.” At the level of visual grammar, rigorous symmetrical compositions, rounded forms, dynamic structures of joyful encounters, and a polychromatic color system collectively reflect ethical norms and aesthetic ideals of harmony. At the cultural connotation level, the patterns visually translate the cosmology of unity between Heaven and Man, Confucian marital ethics, and traditional stylized creation into a form of visual philosophy. This research reveals the internal logic and visual grammar through which these patterns carry the cultural meaning of “harmony and union,” providing a cultural gene map for contemporary innovation in traditional crafts.
