Abstract

Rabindranath Tagore’s “religion of the poet” can be read as a poetic-aesthetic response to the dislocations of modernity, foregrounding his hybrid role as both a modern poet-philosopher and a cultural emissary in the early twentieth-century British cultural sphere. Moving between Romantic poetics and Indian spiritual traditions, he developed a phenomenological poetics grounded in natural imagery, intuitive experience, and sensory immediacy. This poetic vision resisted instrumental rationality and sought to restore an affective bond between self and cosmos, resonating with certain strands of Western modernism in its reconfiguration of the sensible. Emerging from the Global South, this disruptive aesthetics gestures toward a form of re-enchantment that unsettled Western cultural hegemony while opening alternative horizons of modernity through a distinctively “Southern” literary imagination.
