- Abstract
Since the 1980s, numerous works have emerged in Chinese contemporary installation art. Early on, its conceptual methods bore much imitation of Western contemporary art. With ongoing practice and cultural awareness, artists developed new creative dimensions from group characteristics, collective memory and other aspects. By then, Chinese contemporary installation art had the connotation of intellectual metaphor, including origin exploration, perspective extension and wisdom thinking. Taking works by four artists with distinct local traits—Xu Bing, Gu Wenda, Cai Guoqiang and Huang Yongping—as examples, this paper explores the perspectives, connections and couplings of metaphors in installation art. These works go beyond the construction and bearing of installation space, condensing intellectual expressions in the multiple constructions of narrative aesthetics.
