Abstract

This goal of this is to represent the transformation of the Lancang Kocik folk song into a short story titled “Pipa Air Mata” by M. Badri, viewed from the aspect of modernity. The development of technology and changes in power also play a role in the ecological changes of living patterns and cultural changes. Initially, the Lancang Kocik folk song served as a work chant and a symbol of identity for the Sakai tribe community. However, the presence of modernization “force” oral forms to adapt or transform into other forms. This transformation serves to preserve the identity and culture of the collective community. Therefore, the form of a digital short story emerges as one of the efforts to maintain the existence of the Sakai tribe today. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with ethnographic techniques and literature studies. Data were collected using interview techniques, documentation recording, and retroactive reading using digital literature and modernity theory approaches by Ong and Bauman. The results include: (1) the existence of the PAM digital short story only transforms from oral to written form and from song to short story. Meanwhile, the theme, background, and character aspects remain similar. Both objects address ecological and social issues. The background aspect similarly represents customary land in Riau Province. Like wise, the characters and characterization uplift the Sakai tribe; (2) the existence of technology in the modern era can have positive and negative impacts. The negative impact of technology is the creation of development that disregards ecological sustainability and sidelines local culture. The positive impact is that technology serves as an art in maintaining life because it provides many conveniences for humans. Furthermore, the presence of technology can preserve the existence of literary works.
