- Abstract
Raja Parhata [rɑjʌ pʌrhɑtʌ] ‘the king of words’ or spokesman is needed in all ethnic ceremonial of Toba Batak people because he has an urgent duty and responsibility to explain, argue, and discuss important points. Some of the important points are expressed in the moment of ethnic discussion in the ceremonial. The existence of Raja Parhata is important for both communion and ceremonial well surroundings. Due to his duty, Raja Parhata commonly composed his language beautifully and politely but understandable and straight to the point. Thus, this study aims to explore how the messages Raja Parhata affected his sentence structure. The analysis of the sentence types found that Raja Parhata mainly composed his messages in compound-complex sentences for 7 sentences from 17 sentences or 41%. This finding is different from the previous literature of syntactic analysis on song lyrics and speech script which is mostly composed in simple sentences. To find the cause of those compound-complex sentences’ existence, the study focuses on analyzing the 7 compound-complex sentences. The further analysis defined three important things (1) the nominals and modifiers are in clauses, (2) the unit of modifiers which is the information of time and place is composed completely with the unit of action, definite listeners, and detailed information which automatically created clauses, due to the nominals there is an underlined messages which re-tell or re-summarize the main ideas the raja parhata mean to convey, and (3) due to the duty, function, and responsibility of a raja parhata, the findings marked the main objectives of a raja parhata which is to give clear information in supporting the understanding of all listeners and participants.
