- Abstract
This study explores tertiary English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ perceptions of the practical use, benefits, and challenges of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in academic writing, focusing on users’ agency in the Makassar, Indonesia context. Grounded in the uses determinism, which emphasizes users’ autonomy over technology’s effects, this study examines how students engage with AI for academic writing, balancing its advantages with ethical and practical concerns. Utilizing a quantitative survey with 100 EFL students from a university, the research investigates students’ experiences, preferred AI tools, writing process stages for AI integration, and the extent of AI involvement. Findings indicate a hierarchy in AI tool preferences, with ChatGPT, Grammarly, and QuillBot as the most frequently utilized, especially in editing and revision. A balanced collaboration between AI and users was preferred, rather than allowing AI to dominate the writing process. Perceived benefits include improved writing quality, enhanced efficiency, and affective support, fostering confidence and motivation. However, challenges such as overreliance on AI, limitations in contextual understanding, hallucination, and institutional policy gaps were identified. The study highlights the importance of AI literacy and institutional guidelines to prevent academic integrity issues and promote ethical AI integration in EFL writing. These insights underscore the need for targeted instructional and technical solutions to address both benefits and challenges, supporting more effective and ethical AI use in academic settings.
