Abstract

Bark cloth is a cultural heritage of the Rampi people which has high historical and artistic value. However, as time goes by, interest and skills in making this cloth are declining among the younger generation. This research wants to examine how traditional schools can be used as a means to preserve bark cloth culture by teaching the process of making it to the younger generation. This research aims to preserve bark cloth as a local culture through the implementation of traditional school-based education. The research method uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, involving observation, interviews and documentation as data collection techniques. The traditional school in Rampi District was chosen as a medium to teach the process of making bark cloth, starting from selecting materials, making techniques, to introducing the cultural values contained therein. The research results show that the implementation of the bark cloth preservation program through traditional schools in Rampi District has had a positive impact on the awareness and skills of the younger generation in making this traditional cloth. From participatory observation, it was found that students involved in traditional school activities showed significant improvements in understanding the process of making bark cloth. Overall, this research shows that traditional schools play an important role in preserving bark cloth as a local culture. Students’ active involvement in the learning process and bark cloth making in traditional schools has increased cultural awareness and traditional skills, ensuring that this cultural heritage can be passed on to the next generation.
