Fillers Used By Lecturers in EFL Classroom Interaction

- Abstract
The objectives of this research were to find out (1) the fillers used by the lecturers in EFL classroom interaction, and (2) the functions of the fillers used by the lecturers in EFL classroom interaction. The researcher applied descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this research were the lecturers at English Language Education of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong. The researcher did classroom observation by recording the lecturers’ activities. The observation was conducted in five meetings. In doing the observation, the researcher used audio recorder to record all the activities in classroom interaction, and transcript the recording to identify and analyze the data concerning the fillers and the function of the fillers used by the lecturers. The result of the research revealed that (1) the fillers used by the lecturers of English teaching in EFL classroom interaction are: oh, assalamu’alaikum, good afternoon, so, okay, right, absolutely, and thank you, (2) the functions of the fillers used by the lecturers of English teaching in EFL classroom interaction are: interjections, greetings/farewells, discourse markers, response getters, response forms, and polite forms.
