Abstract

Idioms are a fundamental element of daily communication, capturing the essence of a language but also presenting significant challenges. They often lack direct counterparts in different languages due to their unique linguistic and cultural context. This cultural specificity makes it impossible to have a one-size-fits-all approach to translation. Prioritizing pragmatic meaning over literal interpretation is crucial, as translating idioms word-for-word can result in significant confusion. This study examines key idioms in “The Big Nate” comic books and outlines translation strategies based on Baker’s 1992 framework. It begins by defining idioms, categorizes them, and ultimately offers techniques and procedures for their translation.
