Abstract

Indonesia has entered a period of aging population, with Yogyakarta Province as one of the regions with the highest percentages of elderly population. Research has indicated that 25.7% of the elderly experience disabilities, which may have implications for their quality of life. Self-acceptance is a factor that contributes to self-esteem and mindfulness, potentially influencing quality of life. This study investigates the correlation between self-acceptance and quality of life among elderly individuals with disabilities. This cross-sectional study included 115 elderly participants with disabilities who fulfilled the inclusion criteria: age ≥ 60 years, ability to communicate effectively, and experience of disability prior to elderly age. Elderly individuals with cognitive disabilities were excluded. Self-acceptance was evaluated using the Self-Acceptance Questionnaire, while quality of life was assessed utilizing the WHOQOL-BREF. The correlation between self-acceptance and quality of life was analyzed using statistical measurements. Most participants had high self-acceptance (67.8%) and a high quality of life in the physical (39.1%), social (41.7%), and environmental (53.9%) domains, with a very high quality of life in the psychological (36.5%) domain. There were positive and strong correlations between self-acceptance and quality of life in the physical (r = 0.631, p < 0.001), psychological (r = 0.639, p < 0.001), social (r = 0.579, p < 0.001), and environmental (r = 0.598, p < 0.001) domains. Self-acceptance strongly correlates with quality of life in the physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains among elderly individuals with disabilities. The higher the self-acceptance, the higher the quality of life across all domains.
