Abstract

Formulas for body fat percentage such as the Siri and U.S. Navy methods require multiple measurements or assumptions about body density, making them less practical in everyday settings. Therefore, Body Mass Index (BMI) has been widely used to estimate obesity and body fat pacentage; however BMI’s accuracy has been increasingly questioned due to their inability to account for fat distribution and body composition. This study proposes a simpler alternative using only abdomen circumference and waist-hip ratio (WHR) for body fat prediction. Using a dataset of 252 samples from a publicly available body composition dataset, key features were engineered and standardized. K-Means clustering revealed clear groupings based on body composition, while Euclidean distance analysis demonstrated that abdomen circumference had the closest alignment with body fat percentage. Specifically, abdomen measurements achieved 45.5% lower distance than BMI, and a combination of abdomen and WHR further improved prediction by 49.1% over BMI. The results indicate that central adiposity measures provide significantly more accurate estimations of body fat, supporting their prioritization over BMI in clinical and predictive health applications.
