Abstract

This paper presents the design and simulation of a coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed octagonal loop antenna using Ansys HFSS, specifically tailored for Internet of Things (IoT)-based healthcare applications. The proposed antenna operates over an extensive frequency range of 2.25–9.7 GHz, making it suitable for a wide variety of wireless communication needs. Fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a thickness of 1.6 mm and a relative permittivity of 4.4, the antenna initially demonstrates a peak gain of 4.4 dBi. To enhance its performance, a metallic reflector is introduced, which significantly increases the gain to 9.4 dBi. This notable improvement not only boosts the antenna’s directional radiation properties but also ensures more reliable and focused signal transmission. The enhanced gain and wideband characteristics make the antenna highly effective for critical healthcare scenarios, especially within the 5.8 GHz band, which is commonly used in wireless medical telemetry. The design supports high-data-rate transmission, essential for real-time remote patient monitoring, wireless body area networks (WBANs), and smart hospital infrastructure. Furthermore, the improved directivity and reduced back radiation achieved through the use of a reflector contribute to better signal stability and minimized interference—key factors in ensuring consistent and safe operation in medical environments. Overall, the proposed CPW-fed octagonal loop antenna offers a compelling solution for long-range, low-power IoT-based healthcare devices. Its robust performance characteristics make it a promising candidate for integration into next-generation wireless medical systems and smart health monitoring platforms.
