Abstract

As global populations continue to live longer, understanding what drives longevity has become increasingly important for policymakers. This study investigates the impact of government healthcare expenditure and GDP per capita on life expectancy across 151 countries from 2002 to 2021. Using panel data analysis, the research applies pooled OLS, Fixed Effects (FE), and Random Effects (RE) models, with the Hausman Test confirming the FE model with robust standard errors as the most appropriate. The findings reveal a positive relationship between healthcare spending and longevity, though the effect is modest. In contrast, GDP per capita shows a strong and statistically significant impact on life expectancy. These results suggest that while health investment matters, economic development plays a more substantial role. The study highlights the importance of balanced policy strategies that combine health system strengthening with broader economic growth to support long-term improvements in public health outcomes.
