Abstract

Sleep disturbances have become increasingly prevalent, prompting interest in alternative remedies for improving sleep quality. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Suksaiyad recipe—a traditional Southeast Asian herbal formulation—on sleep quality using the pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). Conducted as a one-month pre-post intervention, the study involved 30 adult participants from Payap University, all of whom were identified as having poor sleep quality (PSQI > 5). Participants consumed two Suksaiyad capsules daily for 30 consecutive days. Pre- and post-intervention PSQI scores were compared using a paired sample t-test, with effect size measured by Cohen’s d. Results revealed a significant reduction in average PSQI scores from 10.42 ± 2.84 at baseline to 5.06 ± 2.19 post-intervention (t(29) = 9.21, p < 0.001), indicating substantial improvement in sleep quality. The effect size was large (Cohen’s d = 1.65). Moreover, the proportion of participants classified as poor sleepers dropped from 100% to 36.7%, a statistically significant change (p < 0.001, McNemar’s test). These findings align with previous studies supporting the efficacy of traditional herbal remedies in managing insomnia symptoms. This study suggests that the Suksaiyad recipe can meaningfully enhance sleep quality in individuals with insomnia. Further research with a larger, more diverse sample and a randomized controlled design is recommended to confirm these findings and explore underlying mechanisms.
