- Abstract
Advancements in technology have created revolutionary changes over the past two decades. However, there is another, perhaps more pernicious, side to these advancements: breaches of privacy, unlawful collection and use of personal information, misuse of technology for harassment, and other cybercrimes. Children and youth have the greatest potential, but they are also exposed to the greatest risks in the information technology revolution. They have access, at unprecedented speeds, to a vast array of valuable information, but also to unwanted, unverified, and harmful content. The impressions that digital media leaves on children and youth have created concerns for parents, teachers, and society. Social media overuse contributes to rising levels of anxiety, depression, and collapsing attention spans among the younger generation. Governments worldwide are implementing legal measures to address these issues, yet a glaring problem across all laws is weak enforcement. This paper aims to assess how social media has changed young people’s lives, both positively and negatively, and how effectively current legal frameworks address these risks. It further argues for improved digital literacy and stronger collaboration between policymakers, technology companies, and civil society to ensure a safer digital space for youth.
