- Abstract
This study evaluates the impact of the China–Laos Railway (CLR) on digital goods trade within the Greater Mekong Subregion(GMS). Using panel data from the United Nations Comtrade database between 2017 and 2023 and applying a difference-in-differences estimation strategy, the analysis finds that the railway’s operation significantly promoted the growth of digital goods trade. Enhanced internet infrastructure, measured by fixed broadband subscriptions per capita, served as a key mechanism. Robustness checks, including propensity score matching and placebo tests, confirm the core findings. The results suggest that modern railway infrastructure facilitates not only physical cargo flows but also digital trade expansion, offering insights for regional connectivity and digital integration strategies in developing economies.
