Abstract

The post-pandemic era has fundamentally transformed digital education from a supplementary option into a core component of higher education ecosystems. This shift introduces multifaceted challenges that extend far beyond technological deployment, including issues of pedagogical alignment, faculty development, user adoption, and demonstrating sustainable value. This paper contends that IT project management (ITPM) serves as a critical framework for navigating these digital education challenges, providing the necessary structure and methodologies for successful project execution. Employing a multi-method approach—including bibliometric analysis, a conceptual case study examined through the Community of Inquiry (Col) framework, and a review of technological trends—this research demonstrates that integrating formal ITPM principles (especially in scope, stakeholder, quality, and risk management) is indispensable for ensuring that digital education initiatives are pedagogically sound, technologically robust, and sustainably adopted. The analysis further reveals that many common implementation failures—such as student disengagement, instructor overload, and unmet learning outcomes—stem from gaps in management practices rather than technological shortcomings. By aligning management strategies with educational objectives, this study provides practitioners with an integrated framework to proactively address these challenges and underscores the pivotal role of ITPM in achieving resilient and effective digital education ecosystems.
