Abstract

Regentschap Cilacap is a regency located in the southern part of Central Java and is known as a peripheral or hinterland region. This designation makes Regentschap Cilacap seem isolated and less attractive for research, including in the aspect of past entertainment. However, historical data shows that Regentschap Cilacap had facilities that supported entertainment activities. The emergence of this entertainment activity is related to ethical policies, where ethical policies encourage modernization, which in turn allows access and cultural interaction between Bumiputera and Europeans. This research aims to examine the variety of entertainment in Regentschap Cilacap during the Dutch colonial period in the early 20th century. The research method used was the historical method. The findings indicated that demographic conditions and social construction played a role in the dynamics of entertainment. Various forms of entertainment were found to have developed in Regentschap Cilacap, such as sport activities, pasar malam (night market) particularly modern entertainment introduced by the European community (De Societiet and Tourism),as well as the factors that contributed to the survival and development of these entertainments in Regentschap Cilacap.
