Abstract

Teaching EFL to new English learners who are actively speaking their first and second languages is challenging for EFL teachers. To help students understand the English materials and hold classroom interaction, teachers might incorporate the languages their students speak into their classroom. The teacher purposefully used the students’ acquired languages in the class to stimulate them to learn English using the languages they understand. This research showed how an English teacher at SMPN 1 Salem Subdistrict, Brebes District, Central Java Province, integrates the students’ mother tongue and national language by translating, mixing languages, switching languages, and practicing translanguaging. The data were collected through classroom observations, questionnaires, and interviews. The results revealed the use of English, Indonesian, and Sundanese in a particular Brebes Dialect. It is particularly performed by the teacher to reach her teaching goals, to support students’ learning, and to create a comfortable learning environment for new EFL learners.
