Abstract

This study to analyze the representation of the School Lunch Program in Chef: Mitsuboshi no Kyushoku and to explore how the program reflects the SDG’s. Using a qualitative approach with content analysis methods, this study examines all relevant episodes using Stuart Hall’s reflective representation theory. Axial and selective coding produced five main subthemes: food presentation, student and staff interaction, education, food quality, and cleanliness. These sub-themes were then categorized into two major themes: (1) representation of lunch program practices as an integrated educational system and (2) representation of health and safety standards within the lunch program system. The findings show that school lunches are represented not only as a routine act of consumption, but also as a medium for character, social, and knowledge education. Technical aspects such as quality control and sanitation reflect high standards for food health and safety. This representation aligns with real-life practices in Japan and contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. This study provides insight into how media can reflect cultural values and educational policies, as well as their relevance to policymakers and educators.
