Abstract

Geothermal energy development often intersects with community livelihoods; however, local communities’ perceptions of these projects remain understudied in the literature. This research explores how farmers in Dieng, Central Java, conceptualize the presence and operations of the Dieng Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP Dieng), which coexists with their traditional farming activities. Employing an ethnographic approach among farmers, the study captures the lived experiences and socio-cultural interpretations of geothermal development. The findings indicate that farmers hold ambivalent views: while some appreciate the economic benefits of land leasing and job opportunities, others express concerns over environmental degradation and reduced agricultural yields. Notably, farmers’ perceptions varied based on their geothermal energy interventions. The research reveals that farmers’ conceptualizations of geothermal energy are deeply embedded in their local ecological and Islamic knowledge base. These insights challenge the homogenized narratives of renewable energy acceptance and emphasize the need for context-specific community-engagement strategies. This study contributes to energy transition debates by advocating participatory governance models that integrate local community voices in geothermal project planning and mitigation efforts.
