- Abstract
This article explores the use of dysphemism in a movie entitled the End of Watch (2012), focusing on the spoken dialogue of main and supporting characters. The study uses qualitative research and aims to find out what are the types and functions of dysphemistic expressions found throughout the film. The writer collects the data by applying non-participant observation, and note taking technique to gain all supporting data. Furthermore, additional method to support the process of analyzing such as qualitative content analysis is also employed. The result shows that there are 155 dysphemistic expressions and the most dominant type used is dysphemistic euphemism while mostly employed by the speaker to express strong emotions. The study concludes that dysphemism in End of Watch serves not only as verbal offense, but also as a tool for emotional expression, identity, and solidarity among characters. The use of harsh and informal language reflects the real-life pressures of law enforcement and offers insight into how language operates in extreme social environments.
