Abstract

Santri in modern pesantren are exposed with the learning of not only Arabic language but also English. This research is designed to reveal how the learning of English and Arabic by MBI Amanatul Ummah (MBI AU) Mojokerto santri affects their identity construction. The subjects of this study were MBI AU santri in grades XI and XII, both male and female. Sampling was done purposively according to the research objectives. Data were obtained from messages contained in the whatsapp group of MBI AU santri, public conversation data such as performance in informal MCs and communication books, and also from the questionnaire. The data were analyzed descriptively to see how the influence of English and Arabic learning on the construction of santri identity. The research found that the main influence of English and Arabic language learning is the sense of internationality and modernity on both languages. English is more influential due to the fact of higher exposures and assimilation. Hence, the majority of santri exhibit multicompetence in their language use, characterized by a syntactic blend of English with Javanese or Indonesian. Meanwhile the Arabic language is not comfortably used due to its sacred nature.
