Abstract

Translation between languages with different structures and cultural backgrounds is a complex process that demands high accuracy. This study discusses the translation of compound verbs in two Japanese short stories: Majutsu by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, featured in the book Antologi Kesusastraan Anak Jepang by Antonius R. Pujo Purnomo, and Serohiki no Gōshu by Miyazawa Kenji from Kaze no Matasaburo: Kumpulan Cerita Pendek Karya Sastra by Miyazawa Kenji, published by UNPAD Press. The aim of this research is to identify translation techniques used to preserve the original meaning and cultural nuances from the source language into Indonesian, referencing the translation theories of Vinay and Darbelnet. The applied method is qualitative descriptive, through observation and data recording techniques. Analysis is conducted using a translation equivalence approach and presented informally. The findings reveal three Vinay and Darbelnet translation techniques applied: modulation, literal translation, and transposition, as well as reduction, a translation technique from Newmark, with literal translation being the most dominant. This study emphasizes the importance of selecting appropriate translation techniques to preserve both the meaning and literary aesthetics in the translated text.
