Abstract

Music serves as a universal medium of communication capable of conveying a wide range of messages, including religious values. In Indonesia, religious music has grown significantly, particularly through the works of pop musicians who embed spiritual messages into entertainment. The band Ungu stands out as a prominent figure in this context, consistently releasing religious-themed songs, especially during the holy month of Ramadan. This study aims to identify the types of lexical diction found in Ungu’s religious song lyrics and analyze their function in constructing spiritual meaning. Using a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis, this research focuses on three of Ungu’s well-known religious songs: Andai Ku Tahu, Dengan NafasMu, and SurgaMu. The findings show that lexical diction—words with denotative or literal meanings—effectively conveys clear, emotional, and accessible religious messages. Words such as ajal, nafas, ampunan, and surga not only serve literal purposes but also carry theological, emotional, and existential significance within an Islamic cultural framework. Semantic analysis further reveals relationships such as synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, hypernymy, and polysemy, which enrich the interpretative depth without compromising clarity. Lexical diction functions as an effective rhetorical strategy in religious mass communication, promoting the internalization of Islamic values in popular culture. This study highlights the crucial role of language in spiritual expression and recommends further comparative studies on lexical diction in both religious and secular musical genres.
