Abstract

Siri’ is the center of identity for the Bugis-Makassar people and symbolizes a commitment to honor dignity, and personal integrity. The siri’ culture is reflected in the movie Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck through Zainuddin as the main character. The researcher explored how the conception and types of siri’ culture represented through Zainuddin as the main character in Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck. The research aims to identify siri’ culture in the socio-cultural life of the Bugis-Makasar people. This research method used a literary anthropology approach. The material object is the movie Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck. The formal objects are film narrative structure theory (Himawan Pratista, 2017) and representation theory (Struat Hall, 1997). The research’s significance lies in preserving local culture in globalization. The findings of this research are (1) Siri’ as a strict tradition/custom that upholds the dignity of the Bugis-Makasar people’s self-identity. This value is not just symbolism, but a real action in maintaining honor, such as daring to risk life to maintain honor. (2) Zainudin’s character can present three types of Siri’: siri’ ripakasiri’, mappakasiri’, and siri’ na pacce, which provides a deeper understanding of the values of siri’ that can build self-identity and community relations between Bugis-Makassar communities. This research complements previous studies by offering a new perspective on raising siri’ as Bugis Makassar culture represented in films through a literary anthropology approach.
