Implementation of User Education at Dinas Kearsipan dan Perpustakaan Provinsi Jawa Tengah

Abstract

User education is a form of activity carried out by librarians to introduce and explain the various information sources owned by the library using certain learning methods and media. This activity is important to be carried out by the library so that users can utilize library resources optimally, in line with the library’s role as an information institution that serves the entire community in obtaining knowledge to support the creation of a smart, skilled, and information literate society. However, the literature on implementation of user education is limited, especially in public libraries. This research discusses the user education implementation in the Dinas Kearsipan dan Perpustakaan Provinsi Jawa Tengah using qualitative methods. Data were collected through observations and semi-structured interview. The results show that the user education at the Dinas Kearsipan dan Perpustakaan Provinsi Jawa Tengah does not have a routine schedule, but is based on requests from outside parties or visitors. User education is also implemented through school library integrated services, education to the community, and digital literacy workshops. In addition, it was also found that the Dinas Kearsipan dan Perpustakaan Provinsi Jawa Tengah does not have a specific policy that explicitly regulates user education. There are new findings on user education method, which are using lecture methods, audio-visuals, seminars and workshops, as well as programmed instruction. These findings are expected to illustrate the implementation of user education at the Dinas Kearsipan dan Perpustakaan Provinsi Jawa Tengah and become a reference for further development of user education research in public libraries.
