- Abstract
The concept of Nur Muhammad as the primordial light is a Sufi doctrine that plays an important role in the formation of Islamic cosmology. In the archipelago, this doctrine lives in the tradition of reading Maulid such as al-Barzanji, Simthud Durar, and other local versions. However, there are not many studies that examine the theological and symbolic representation of Nur Muhammad in these books. Through a narrative literature review approach, this study reveals how Nur Muhammad is positioned as the spiritual core of the Prophet and a symbol that forms local Islamic identity. The results of the study show that this concept is not only alive in the theological structure of the text, but also in the cultural practices of traditional Muslim communities. This finding broadens the horizon of the study of Islam Nusantara by connecting Sufism, religious literacy, and local spirituality.
